Red Flag Warning Issued for Much of Utah Through 10 PM Saturday as Dry Lightning and 35 MPH Winds Raise Rapid Fire Spread Risk
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of Utah, in effect through 10 PM Saturday, June 20, 2026, as critical fire weather conditions raise the risk of rapid fire spread on both new and existing fires across the state.
Dry Lightning Threatens Northwest Utah This Afternoon and Evening
According to the warning, widely scattered dry thunderstorms are expected across northwest Utah this afternoon and evening. Dry lightning is particularly dangerous because it can spark new fires without producing enough rain to keep them contained, especially in areas where vegetation is already critically dry.
Gusty Winds and Low Humidity Drive Fire Risk in Southern and Eastern Utah
Across primarily southern and eastern Utah, forecasters are warning of gusty westerly winds up to 35 mph combined with relative humidity as low as 7 to 12 percent. That combination of strong wind and extremely dry air creates ideal conditions for any spark, whether from lightning, equipment, or human activity, to grow into a fast moving fire within minutes.
Much of Utah Falls Within the Warning Area
The Red Flag Warning covers a large portion of the state, including areas surrounding Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, Logan, Park City, Duchesne, Price, Moab, Richfield, Cedar City, St. George, and Kanab. The National Weather Service noted the warning applies to much of Utah where fuels are critical, meaning dry brush and vegetation are primed to ignite easily under current conditions.
What Residents Should Do to Avoid Sparking a Fire
With conditions this volatile, officials are urging residents to avoid any activity that could create a spark, including outdoor work involving equipment, chains dragging from vehicles, or unauthorized open flames. Following all local fire restrictions is critical during this warning period. Residents are also encouraged to know their evacuation route in advance and have multiple ways to receive weather information in case conditions change quickly.
Conditions Expected to Ease After 10 PM Saturday
The Red Flag Warning is set to expire at 10 PM Saturday, but residents should continue monitoring local forecasts in the days ahead, as fire weather conditions across the West can return quickly once humidity drops and winds pick up again.
Fire danger across Utah can shift fast, and staying informed before conditions escalate makes all the difference. Check back with pinewhispers.net for updates as this Red Flag Warning continues through the evening.
