Attention all freshmen! Transitioning from middle school to high school can be a tricky and confusing ordeal. Here are some tips for the newest Demons for surviving their first year at Reynolds High School.
Most importantly, walk fast. And walk either single file or by twos in the hallways, and try to stay on the right side of the hall. Go directly to class. Do not stop to talk to friends, do not pass Go, do not collect $200. If you stop to socialize, the other people in the hallway will get annoyed and will push through you. This is especially bad if there are upperclassmen in the hallways trying to get from the third floor to the history building.
And another thing:
“If the upperclassmen tell you to move back at a football game, you move back,” said sophomore Caty Miller.
Some may think this is harsh, but all upperclassmen were freshmen at one point, and all had to endure the ridicule by those in grades above.
Another piece of advice is bringing a jacket to class. Classrooms are commonly freezing during the hotter months because the air conditioning is on full blast. For ladies, if teachers think your top is too scandalous, throwing a jacket over it will usually help to resolve the problem, so it’s often helpful to have one on hand.
The cleaner bathrooms at Reynolds are typically in the arts building and cafeteria. The main building bathrooms can be pretty unsavory, especially on the first floor and the history building. When using the bathroom, check to see if the stall has toilet paper before proceeding!
“I cannot tell you how many times I went in the bathroom and found myself toilet paperless,” junior Naomi Ruchugo said. “Toilet paper is definitely your biggest supporter on the potty.”
Also, there are many ways to get involved at Reynolds, and joining a service club is one of them. Service clubs are a great opportunity to meet new people and help the community, and they are also a plus to adding to college applications.
“I think I’m going to try and join Key Club this year,” freshman Aaron Cooper said. “It seems like a lot of fun and benefits the community.”
Along with joining a service club, freshmen should definitely consider trying out for a sport. Don’t be intimidated about trying out even if you don’t think you’ll make it. Or as an alternative for those less athletic, consider joining other clubs Reynolds offers. A wide variety of sports and clubs are available, so there is most likely something offered to match any interest.
And lastly, have some school spirit. You’re a Demon now! Stay classy, Reynolds.
