Food Fanatics: Fried Chicken

As summer comes to an end, what better way is there to end it then by eating greasy fried food? That is why I have made it my mission to travel Winston-Salem in search for the best fried chicken this city has to offer.  I will be ranking the restaurant on a scale from one to ten, and each restaurant will be graded on presentation, flavor, portion size, tenderness of meat, crunch of the breading, price and overall atmosphere.  Three restaurants came to mind when trying to locate the best fried chicken in town, which include Uncle Buzzy’s Fried Food, Mountain Fried Chicken and Slappy’s Chicken.

Uncle Buzzy’s Fried Food

Uncle Buzzy’s opened up less than a month ago and they have already caught my attention for some of the best fried chicken in Winston Salem. Buzzy’s serves up large portions that are very reasonably priced, allowing for a filling and cheap meal. With little seating, Buzzy’s is great for a quick meal on the go.  I would give Buzzy’s a total score of seven out of ten.

Mountain Fried Chicken

Mountain Fried Chicken has been serving up some of Winston’s best chicken since 1987. The chicken is seasoned with various spices and cooked at just the right temperature allowing for a crispy exterior and tender inside. With very reasonable prices as well as four locations across Winston, it is accessible from just about anywhere in the city.  I would give Mountain Fried Chicken an eight and a half out of ten.

Slappy’s Chicken

It is not a coincidence that Slappy’s Chicken has won the award for best chicken in Winston both years since its opening in 2016. Its Nashville style chicken has caught the attention of myself and many other locals. Slappy’s is served with its signature sauce : the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Your food is served to you within five minutes or less allowing for a quick and easy visit.  Slappy’s would rank the highest on my scale with a nine and a half out of ten.

Overall, Slappy’s was my favorite fried chicken restaurant. It met the majority of the  requirements I had when grading this Southern staple. Specifically, the Nashville oriented style added just the right balance of flavors, while the homey atmosphere pulled everything together. Next time you are looking for fried chicken, give Slappy’s Chicken a stop by.
