Homecoming at RJR was another jam-packed week of school spirit, decorative banners, and dazzling court couples; all things that are to be expected with this coveted event.

Homecoming is an exciting time of year.  Freshmen experience their very first RJR spirit week, while sophomores and juniors add one more memorable homecoming to their high school memories. Seniors, being the most exuberant of all students, flaunt that they are in fact graduating this school year.

Spirit Week this year included: Bookworm Monday, Jersey Tuesday, Character Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and Black and Gold Friday. All of these days received their own share of RJR participation and many notable dress ups.  However, there were also some negative opinions on the jersey day timing.

“It was very inconvenient that picture day overlapped with jersey day,” junior Will Fulton said.  “I would have worn my Michael Phelps jersey.”

Furthermore, the pep rally was held in the auditorium this year, instead of the Bryson Gym. This too was met with mixed reviews, as new events like the “Lip Sync Battle” were added for senior homecoming couples.  However, some students did not appreciate the change of location.

“The only people [on stage] you could see were the boots, and the cheerleaders,” sophomore and color-guard member Tiasha Shavers said.

The big event of homecoming was at the Deaton Thompson stadium, the football game between the Demons and the Grimsley Whirlies,  where the Demons snatched a 28-14 victory. This game garnered a huge audience with everyone being excited for the 2017-2018 homecoming court, along with who would be their new homecoming queen.

“Being homecoming queen is one of those moments I will forever remember and treasure,” 2015 Homecoming Queen and RJR alum Rachel Kiger said.  “…it was a moment and a night that I got to share with my closest friends, my family, so many smiles and a school that I love.”

Baker Kenan, the 2017 homecoming queen and everyone involved in this time of year were able to experience what Kiger described.

“The whole time is so much fun… it was an experience that made me feel incredibly connected to Reynolds and I wouldn’t trade that time for the world,” Kiger said.
