An old wallet and Leeds United membership card recovered from weeds after more than 30 years

Lost Wallet Returned to English Sports Reporter After 30 Years, Revealing Leeds United Memories and an Accidental Time Capsule

LEEDS, UK — An English sports reporter has been reunited with a wallet he never realized was missing for more than three decades. Inside was a Leeds United membership card dating to the 1992-93 season, turning the find into a personal snapshot of his life in the early 1990s.

The wallet belonged to Mark Dexter, who used to live in the Rawden area where it was discovered. He said he has no memory of losing it, and does not know how it ended up buried there.

Leeds United Card Helped Identify the Wallet’s Owner

Claire Wilson, who runs a local forest school, found the wallet and shared photos of its contents on Facebook in hopes of identifying the person linked to the Leeds card. Dexter’s wife saw the post, and the couple later collected the long-lost item.

Dexter told the BBC that, as a sports reporter, he might have been expected to look happier in the old photograph on the card. He said he used to cover Leeds United for the Yorkshire Evening Post at the time.

Found During a Community Cleanup Near a Former Garden

Wilson said the wallet was uncovered while weeds were being cut back as part of a community project connected to the forest school. The spot had once been a private garden and, at another point, was attached to a nearby hotel.

She said the wallet had been swallowed by overgrowth before it was finally exposed during the work. The find added an unexpected personal story to the cleanup effort.

Dexter Says the Find Brought Back a Happier Chapter of Life

Dexter said he used to frequent the local pub scene and had lived in the area before, but he could not explain how the wallet was lost. One possibility he raised was that it may have gone missing on a night when he had too much to drink, or perhaps while he was at a cricket match.

Now 63, Dexter said the discovery prompted him to look back on a time when he was 30, enjoying journalism and newspaper work. He described it as a strange but welcome reminder of a life he enjoyed.
