Cross country and track & field have played a crucial role in senior captain Jarred Slozer’s life ever since middle school. It is not only the sport itself that has played this role, but what it signifies for Slozer, his family and community of peers.

“[Jarred] was a preemie, born very early, along with his siblings,” Jarred’s mother, Loretta Slozer said. “We were told by doctors that he would probably never walk.”

To what was a large uphill battle for Jarred, he took as motivation. After years of physical therapy, Jarred overcame the threats to his athleticism and decided to run competitively in middle school.

Now, as captain of the men’s cross country and indoor track teams, Slozer is committed more than ever to not only his own personal achievements, but also the entire team.

“Being a captain for the team this year has been an amazing experience,” Slozer said. “Leading the guys in track and cross country has been truly fun.”

After having been on this team for four years, Slozer has become a veteran in the sport and has become very confident in his training and in his leadership.

“Jarred has been a phenomenal captain for the team this year,” assistant cross country and track coach Kenneth Brooks said. “He leads by example and he is always ready to take up important responsibilities.”

For Slozer, running is not just about the enjoyment of the sport, although that does play a key role in it. It is about his own battle over adversity. Slozer overcame the doubt and the pain of his situation as a child, only to face it over and over again every time he laces up the racing spikes as a high schooler. That is no easy feat that only few can attest to.

“Running on the team has been an amazing experience,” added Slozer. “I’ve gotten to know so many people and make so many friends.”

Slozer has gotten to become close friends with his teammates over the years at Reynolds. Especially John Tatter, who graduated last year.

“Jarred is a hard worker and a really good kid,” said Tatter. “I like him,” he added with a chuckle.

“Jarred has been a pleasure to run with over the last four years,” senior teammate James Slawter said. “He has become a very good captain this year.”

Slozer makes an effort to put his team first in everything he does, making him a well liked captain among the athletes as well as the coaches.

For Slozer, running is an important thing that has kept him going through the hard times. Just as he did when he was a child, Slozer finds growth and joy in fighting through adversity.

“[Jarred] has worked very hard.” Loretta Slozer added. “He is an inspiration to so many moms in my network.”
