It has been almost two months since the Reynolds community lost beloved golf coach and former sergeant major Lewis “Sarge” Green. Since Green’s passing, RJR has been searching for a new golf coach to carry on his legacy with the golf team.

On October 25, the new coach was announced to the RJR community via Twitter.

“The athletic department would like to welcome Dr. Stewart Hobbs as our new boys golf coach,” @RJRAthletics tweeted on Wednesday.

Hobbs met with the golf team and a few parents on Wednesday to introduce himself and express his expectations for the team.

“I expect good young men, good students, good sportsmanship, and I expect to win,” Coach Stewart Hobbs said.

While Hobbs has never coached a golf team before, he is still an experienced coach. In his career he has coached baseball, basketball, football, and wrestling, he is no stranger to coaching high school sports.

“It’s a learning process for me, but hopefully from my experience has a former coach, principal, and superintendent, I can help lead and direct these young men,” Hobbs said.

The former superintendent of Sampson, Yadkin, and Stokes County has also played countless rounds of golf with the late Sarge Green, so he is not totally new to the RJR golf program.

“He’s a good friend of Sarge’s, so I think he could be a similar coach,” senior golfer Jordan Fant said.

While RJR golfers still miss their former coach, many are excited for this new era of Reynolds golf as well.

“I think he’s going to be good for us because he is going to keep everyone in line and he is ready to have a successful season,” Fant said.

Hobbs will join the team this spring and be able to pick up right where things left off last year, thanks to an older and experienced team. RJR will return nine golfers from last years team, including the top five players. There are also a number of new freshmen and sophomores who are expected to make an impact right away this season.

Despite the coaching change, at least one thing will remain the same for the team.

“Our main goal this year is to win states,” Fant said.
