This weekend, the 103rd Winston-Salem Air Show will take place at Smith Reynolds Airport. Thousands of people attend the annual event to watch the many demonstrations put on by pilots.
The air show is for kids and adults of all ages. There are countless activities, including the aerial demonstrations and getting an up-close look at different kinds of planes. Science teacher Ben Faulk attended the air show last year with his son and said he had an enjoyable experience.
“Somebody was flying a plane like it was a helicopter,” Faulk said, explaining how the pilot had the plane perpendicular to the ground and was using the propeller to keep the plane elevated.
The air show is about more than one or two planes being in the air at one time and everybody in attendance just watching those demonstrations.
“There was a lot more going on than I expected,” Faulk said.
Planes are on display for people to see, and for some of the planes, people are allowed into the cockpit with the pilot to see how planes work and what the pilot’s job is.
Faulk also remembered a car that had a jet engine in it, which allowed the car to travel at very high speeds. The first detail he recounted about this car was that it was very loud, a common theme among air show goers.
Junior Graham Young attended the event when he was 6 years old and doesn’t remember much, but did recall that it was very loud. He also remembered a potentially dangerous incident.
“Two planes were doing a trick and they almost hit each other,” Young said. His favorite part was sitting in the cockpits of planes, as well as pilots throwing miniature footballs to the crowd for children to play with.
Two full days of activities are planned. For the full schedule and extra details, visit this link.
