Despite a tough start to the season, both Reynolds boys and girls varsity lacrosse teams ended a successful regular season as conference champions.

With one of the toughest ranked schedules in the state, the ladies began their season playing a number of top competing teams including Lake Norman, Ardrey Kell, and Charlotte Latin.  However, the lady demons managed to pull of an undefeated conference season after beating East Forsyth to secure a number one seed going into the state tournament.

“For my last four years of playing, Reynolds girls have always had a strong lacrosse program,” senior captain Caroline Harris said.  “I felt that it was expected that we win conference this year and I was confident in our team.”

On Thursday, April 25, the girls team secured a conference tournament trophy as well when they beat West Forsyth with a score of 12-11. Though winning the conference tournament has no effect on state tournament, it was certainly a confidence booster for the team.

“Coming off a big win against West, I would say our team is feeling good about states,” senior Hattie Altman said. “We have high expectations to make it at least past the second round considering we did make it to the final four last year.”

The guys also managed an undefeated conference season and will head into states as a number one seed.

Unfortunately, the boys lost their conference tournament championship to Reagan on april 25. Despite Charlie Mensh’s clutch goal toward the end, the demons lost in overtime after Reagan scored with 1.6 seconds left in the game.

Despite this tough loss, the boys team hopes to use this loss as motivation for the more important tournament: states.

“We’ve been conference champions the last two years but we are hoping this year will be a successful one in terms of the state tournament,” junior Ethan Mou said.  “Making it to the third round is definitely a goal.”

By both the boys and girls teams being named conference champions, lacrosse has proven to be one of the more dominant sports at Reynolds.  Despite both teams having only varsity teams this year, coaches hope that the success of both teams will attract more interest to the sport so that both can have a junior varsity team in future years.
