For the first time AP European History, taught by Angela Bowman, is being offered to students at R.J. Reynolds High School. Bowman wanted to bring this class to Reynolds so that more students would be able to challenge themselves and have an opportunity to take this class.

“I asked Mr. Freeman if we could offer AP Euro and try to get AP students who typically don’t take AP classes to give it a shot and it worked,” Bowman said.

Students get to learn the history of Europe starting around 1450 with a European perspective throughout this class. Students will learn about changes in government, world wars, monarchies, cold wars, religious wars and so much more. Additionally, the class helps students learn skills that will help prepare them for college.

“It enhances what you think you already know about the world,” Bowman said.

AP Euro offers a new class for students to be able to push themselves more than other non-AP classes. Paola Bnunez, a student in AP Euro this year, loves it so far.

“It’s rigorous but it’s not so overwhelming that I don’t have time to go out and do stuff,” Bnunez said.“I can still have time to be active in my community and still get my work done and still have a good understanding of the course.”

Bowman wants students to take AP classes to be challenged and to be more prepared for college.

“I do hope kids will take it,” Bowman said.

Paolo Bnunez, a student in AP Euro this year, loves Bowman as a teacher and she hopes that this class becomes more popular as well. Bowman hopes more students will take this class in the future and thinks this class will bring a different perspective than any other AP history class.

“It’s rigorous but it’s not so overwhelming that I don’t have time to go out and do stuff,” Bnunez said.“I can still have time to be active in my community and still get my work done and still have a good understanding of the course.”

Bowman uses many different teaching styles in this class by using things like PowerPoints and guided notes. She incorporates projects in her classes to be able to go and investigate more about topics they learned in class. This class can connect with many different time periods and other classes.

“Students of history should always be learning all kinds of history because everything connects,” Bowman said. Ap Euro is a unique opportunity that can really impact students’ academic futures for the better.
