Skylar Beam has been taking American Sign Language [ASL] since her sophomore year, but she was interested in the language long before her time at Reynolds.

“I tried to teach myself off of apps in middle school because my nephew has speech problems,” Beam said. “I joined the [ASL] club freshman year and sophomore year is when we got the class approved.”

Beam is heavily involved in the Deaf community. She attends silent dinners with the Deaf and the ‘Deaf and Blind Field Day’ with the ASL III class and ASL Club.

“I go to silent dinners which is pretty much a dinner they have at the mall with the Deaf community where you eat in the food court and you sign and get to know people,” Beam said.

By going to these events, Beam hopes to make an impression on the Deaf community and show people how special it is.

“My goal is just to make a big impact on the community and raise awareness for it,” she said. “When I started I was kind of shocked because I didn’t know there was this whole community out there. I had no idea they were there, I think it’s a really great community more people should know about.”

Beam did not hesitate to get involved in the Deaf community after joining the ASL club as a freshman.

“From the moment she joined the ASL club she fell in love with Deaf Culture, the language and Deaf community,” ASL teacher Aimee Falk said. “I really wish there were more like her.”
