Andrew Jones, a sophomore basketball player for University of Texas at Austin was averaging 13.5 points per game at the beginning of the season,  the second leading scorer on the team. Jones was a McDonald’s All American coming out of Macarthur High School, located in Irving, Texas and after his freshman year at Texas, Jones declared for the NBA draft, but decided to stay for his sophomore season.

Jones suffered a broken wrist in December and did not return to the court until later that month. Once recovered and now back on the court, Jones began to complain of “low energy” and was sent to the team doctors for tests. On January 10, 20 year old Andrew Jones’ basketball career would have to be put on pause as his life had taken a turn for the worst, it was announced that he had been diagnosed with leukemia. Jones was quickly moved to the school’s MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he is still undergoing treatment.

“We do want everyone to know that in the last two weeks, Andrew has made some positive strides, he’s even been able to get out of bed and move around some, which is a huge difference from when he was first diagnosed in Austin.” Jones family announced improvement in his condition towards the end of January.
