The United Kingdom’s royal family has been in the news recently over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement but the positive attention is nothing new for them. The family is not only loved by their subjects in England but also attracts fans from all over the world due to their grace, class, and overall likable persona. Although there is not a set classification as to how far the title of ‘royal family’ extends, there are certain members of the monarch that are most well known and deservingly so.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

At 91, Queen Elizabeth II began public duties during WWII and married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, formerly a Prince of Greece and Denmark, in 1947. After her father’s health quickly declined, Elizabeth ascended to the throne, moved into Buckingham Palace in 1952 and was officially coronated on June 2, 1953. Her Royal Majesty officially became the longest reigning monarch on September 9, 2015, passing her great-great-grandmother Victoria. Being known for not often expressing political opinions but having a great love for her four Pembroke Welsh Corgis, the Queen is a worldwide symbol of motherhood and grace. The couple has four children together: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

Charles, Prince of Wales was born in 1948 as the Queen’s eldest son and heir apparent to the throne. Charles graduated from Trinity College and proceeded to serve in the Royal Navy from 1971-1976 and entered the family life when he married Lady Diana Spencer in 1982. Following the births of their two sons, Prince Harry and Prince William, as well as highly publicized affairs by both, the couple divorced in 1996. Princess Diana passed away tragically in a car accident the next year. In 2005, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles, now the Duchess of Cornwall, a remarriage for both parties. Both Camilla and Charles spend a great deal of time with a variety of charities yet still are not very popular among the people.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge is the eldest son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, and is affectionately known as Wills. Graduating from University of St. Andrews, taking a gap year in South America and Africa, William then spent four years as a pilot in the Royal Air Force and Search and Rescue. In 2010 it was announced that the Prince would marry Catherine (Kate) Middleton a year later, a wedding watched by over 300 million worldwide. Together the couple spend lots of time doing charity work and being truly loved by the public, seen in Princess Kate’s 2012 and 2013’s making of TIME’s Top 100 Most Influential People list. They have two children and are expecting a third in April 2018.

Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge

Prince George of Cambridge is the elder son of Prince William and Princess Kate, born in 2013, the four year old is third in line to the throne. Princess Charlotte is the youngest child of the two, standing at fourth in line at only two years old and due to the recent change in succession rules, cannot be displaced from her spot in line due to any younger brothers. The two have both been acknowledged as fashion icons around the world.

Prince Henry of Wales and Meghan Markle (*names likely changing to Duke and Duchess of Sussex once married*)

Officially Prince Henry of Wales, more commonly known as Prince Harry, the youngest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana is fifth in line to the throne. The Prince is known for lots of short relationships with women as well as a party lifestyle but in 2014, Harry full time became the founder and patron for the Invictus Games, an Olympics style competition for wounded or sick service personnel, starting his turn around to the typical royal. Earlier this month, the engagement to American Meghan Markle was announced after a year of dating with the wedding date set for May 2018. Markle is an actress and humanitarian who will become the first mixed race royal, first American divorcee, and will have to be baptized before the wedding. After union, the titles of the couple will likely be Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
