The Chicken Burrito: A Search for Perfection

The chicken burrito.  El burrito de pollo.  A beautiful intersection of my two favorite producing a tantalizing cuisine.  The chicken burrito is a variation of the classic burrito, with many restaurants adding their special flare to the food item.  I decided to visit three restaurants dabbling in the art of the chicken burrito.

What I found during my ventures was never the same chicken burrito.  What I saw was the indication of a “coral reef” of chicken burritos, a rainbow of tasty tortillas, each with their respective pros and cons.

La Perlita

The chicken burrito at La Perlita comes with a monstrous burrito packed with bell peppers, rice, lettuce and of course, chicken.  On the side, lettuce, avocado, two slices of vibrant red tomatoes and two “hot, hot, hot,” sauces.

Caution: this burrito is not a snack.  It is an entrée, if I have ever seen one.  It took me two meal times to consume the entirety of this gargantuan feast.

This burrito provided a nice, round taste, allowing me to taste all of the ingredients in the burrito, should I focus on what I wanted to taste.  It was clean enough to hold in your hands, but it came with a knife and fork, allowing the eater to options to use utensils or wrap your hand around this beauty and dive in.  Considering how much food was supplied, the wait time was not a problem and the relatively low cost made this a “bang for my buck.”

This is a solid, multi-purpose chicken burrito.  Add either the red or green sauce (red is the spiciest) and you have a masterpiece of “flavortown” wrapped in a tortilla.

Cuchifrito

I would like to preface this by saying the Cuchifrito burrito is a good burrito.  However, it falls in the shadows of its competition.  

The Cuchifrito chicken burrito (rhyming +10) comes with a reasonably sized chicken burrito, lettuce and some rings of onion.  While the rings of onion were special to Cuchifrito, they did little to bolster the taste of the burrito.

I would be comfortable recommending this burrito to someone on the hunt for a healthy, on-the-go burrito, if the wait time and price were in context to what I received.  For the same wait and same price, I got considerably less than the other two restaurants I visited.  Unfortunately, I can not give the “bang for your buck” approval because of this fact.

The taste was default with lackluster spices and mostly rice and beans wrapped in the tortilla.  While the healthiest of the three restaurants, it was at best a default chicken burrito.  Solid in foundation, but with no distinguishable flourishment of cusinal opportunity.

El Rancho Taquería

This was the holy grail of my voyage.  This establishment should be praised for its divine masterpiece that is their chicken burrito–grande style.  

I am salivating over the thought of how tasty this burrito is.  The spices are present.  The size is monstrous.  There is cheese sauce all over this beauty.  While the cheese sauce eliminates any possibility of “hands-on” consumption, the taste and amount given easily make up for this one concession of eating experience.

The wait time is on-par with the food received and the cost is around the same as the La Perlita chicken burrito.  It comes with silverware and its very own red and green sauces.

In comparison to the La Perlita red and green sauces, the only significant difference I could sense was a difference in color between the green sauces.  The La Perlita restaurant green sauce has a lighter tint than the green sauce from El Rancho Taquería, but the tastes are almost identical.  The red sauces are way too hot to delineate any difference of taste.

What have I taken away from my task of tortillas?  It is this: no matter where I went, how big my chicken burrito was, whether or not there were red and green sauces provided, I enjoyed writing a story where my research was eating tasty chicken burritos.  I rate this experience 11/10 demons.
