Pine Whispers is the student-run newspaper at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. Reynolds opened in 1923 and students have been producing papers – named after the fondly remembered pine trees that once dominated the landscape – almost continuously since 1924.
The journalism program at Reynolds is a strong one: two Newspaper/Honors Newspaper courses with 40 seniors, juniors and sophomores; three Yearbook/Honors Yearbook courses with more than 60 students; and two Introduction to Journalism courses made up primarily of freshmen who want to take either Newspaper or Yearbook in later years. Adviser Steve Hanf worked as a sportswriter for 13 years before joining the Reynolds faculty in 2010 and having the privilege of guiding the journalism program in 2011. He became yearbook adviser in 2013.
Thank you for visiting our site, which celebrated its official launch in August of 2012 to complement the eight print editions produced each year by Newspaper students. Please look around and join in the conversation of this wonderful community that is the R.J. Reynolds High School family!
