On Saturday (Nov. 22), there will be a mattress fundraiser in the Reynolds auxilary gymnasium.
“It’s quirky, it’s outside the box, it’s a little strange,” Athletic Director Brad Fisher said. “But that’s the point.”
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., more than 20 different styles of mattresses of all sizes will be on display at prices advertised as 30 to 60 percent below retail. The mattresses are made in North Carolina and Tennessee, have full warranties, and are sold by a North Carolina retailer, with more than 50 area schools hosting similar events since 2006. The mattresses are delivered about two weeks later.
Reynolds athletes have been asked to invite everyone they know to come to the event, with proceeds raised going to the Demon athletic department to help pay for equipment, renovations and more. Demon athletes get $25 cash for the first person they refer who buys a mattress and $50 in cash for each additional referral.
Reynolds students also are encouraged to help the athletic department by spreading the word and telling their friends and family about the discount mattress fundraiser. While the event is quirky, the benefit for the athletes is that they don’t have to go door to door like most traditional fundraisers.
One out of every 10 people needs a new mattress, so why not get one at an extreme discount while supporting RJR?
“When Reagan did this exact same thing, they broke the local record. They sold 97 mattresses,” Fisher said. “If Reagan can sell 97, we should be able to sell 100.”
