The league’s highest-scoring offense – the Denver Broncos – meets the highest-rated defense in the Seattle Seahawks in New Jersey on Feb. 2 in the Super Bowl. This game is the most anticipated sporting event of the year, and the animated players on both sides, led by trash-talking Richard Sherman of the Seahawks, adds to the excitement even more.
After Seattle edged past the San Francisco 49ers, Sherman had a lot to say. He tipped the pass that would have won the game for the 49ers, sealing the game for the Seahawks and leading them to the Super Bowl. However, it was what happened afterward that had social media buzzing. Not only did Sherman call out Michael Crabtree of the 49ers as a “mediocre” receiver, but he also declared himself the best cornerback in the NFL.
This outburst by Sherman brought plenty of attention to the Seahawks and himself, but the Seahawks are not the only team getting a lot of attention.
Peyton Manning and the Broncos have been Super Bowl favorites since the preseason, with Manning starting off the season with a seven-touchdown performance. Since then, many fans have been waiting to see him be given this opportunity.
“The Broncos and Seahawks both had great seasons and deserve to be there, especially Peyton,” Reynolds junior Arjun Patel said.
While the football game is very exciting, that isn’t the only part of the event that people enjoy. Parties, food and friendly competition are also huge parts of the fun.
“It’s good to see all my friends together and see everyone being competitive,” junior Logan Welch said.
Others, however, look forward to things that have almost nothing to do with football, or even friends.
“I can’t wait to see the Go Daddy commercials,” Patel said.
Commercials are a huge part of the game, and bring in a huge amount of money for the network and the NFL. These commercials are usually funny and cost millions of dollars for companies. The annual hoopla around the Super Bowl ads gives non-sports fans a reason to watch the big game as well.
