The Lady Demons’ Senior Night marks the end of an improved season for the team and the end of a high school volleyball career for Reynolds’ eight seniors. The Demons’ final home game will be played Tuesday night at Bryson Gym against West Forsyth.
“It’s really bittersweet. It’s exciting being a senior and having people look up to you, but it’s also really sad to be leaving,” senior Mackenzie Hunter said.
Senior Night is always an emotional event for teammates, but especially for this tight-knit group of girls. The junior varsity match against West begins at 5 p.m., with the varsity match starting at approximately 6.
“All of the seniors are really close because most of us started on varsity our sophomore year,” senior Elizabeth Meinberg said. “We’ve been able to progress together every season.”
Coach Michelle Collins, in her first year leading Reynolds, was positive about the team’s progress and the results of the season. Although the Demons have a losing record this year, they won four matches, including two in the Central Piedmont 4-A Conference – the first time that has happened in at least five years.
“They have such a positive energy and attitude when they’re together and that’s really refreshing to coach,” Collins said.
Collins has looked to seniors Katherine Dull, Katherine Gwyn and Rachel Lunsford to be leaders this season since the team has no permanent captains. A new addition to the team this year is senior Haley Jacob, who transferred from West. As the libero, she has led the back row as a constant defensive presence.
“It’ll be an interesting game when we play West considering we have one of their former players,” Collins said.
Even though the high school season is ending, many of the seniors plan to continue playing club volleyball next year in college. The Demons are hoping to see a lot of fans at their final home match.
“This year has definitely been one of the best for us and it’s going to be really sad to not play with them again,” Meinberg said of her teammates.
