Many have seen “that bubbly girl with blonde dreads” around Reynolds High School, working at Whole Foods or singing at venues like The Garage. But what many might not know about senior Amy Moret is that she is also a speed demon on race courses.
Moret began running the summer before her freshman year “because my older brother, Mike, ran on the Reynolds team,” she said. “I had become a regular attendee of his meets and liked it.”
Moret has become a tremendous part of the cross-country team because of both her personality and her times in races. During her freshman season, she was running in the 25-minute range for the 3.1-mile courses and now runs the same distance in about 21 minutes. Four minutes is a significant improvement in the world of cross country.
This past season, Moret served as one of the captains of the women’s team.
“The season was really great. All of the runners on our team improved and our varsity placed better than it has in a few years,” Moret said. “Our team members really bonded and I think everyone should be proud of their hard work.”
Moret’s teammates had nothing but positive comments about her.
“She’s always the one who you can rely on to cheer you up and make your day,” junior Caitlin Moffatt said.
Senior co-captain Anna Snyder even referred to Moret as a “princess,” while adding: “Amy is probably one of the funniest people I know, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know her this year.”
Moret is also revered by her coaches.
“She’s always happy and making jokes to keep younger runners at ease and is always giving them advice on how to become better runners,” cross-country coach Ryan Solomon said. “Amy has consistently been our No. 4 runner throughout the season and is proof that the hard work and dedication of her four years in the cross-country/track program at Reynolds will and has paid off.”
Although she is dedicated to running year-round, Moret makes time for other activities such as BMX and making and performing music. She plans on continuing her running career on the collegiate level.
Moret’s leadership and swiftness is an undeniable asset for Reynolds, and her charisma and kindness will be enjoyed by anyone she runs with in the future.
“Amy is a really great person, all around,” freshman Gracie Chaves said. “I appreciate her as a teammate and a captain. I just think she’s really motivational and good spirited.”
